Task 6- genre profiling
Rock 'n' roll is a very worldwide and popular music genre that combines elements of rhythm and blues (R&B), jazz and country music with the addition of electric instruments. Originally associated with youth revolut and transgression, the genre is heavily known for energetic performances, catchy melodies and insightful lyrics
Rock music is a very broad genre of popular music that originated as "rock and roll" in the United states in the late 1940s and early 1950, developing a range of different styles in the mid-1960s and later, particularly in the United States and United Kingdom. Rock musicians in the mid-1960s began to advance the album ahead of the single as the dominant form of recorded music expression and consumption, with The Beatles at the forefront of this development.
Characteristics of rock-
The sound of rock is traditionally centered on the amplified electric guitar, which emerged in its modern form in the 1950s with the popularity of rock and roll. It was also greatly influenced by the sounds of electric blues guitarists. The sound of an electric guitar in rock music is typically supported by an electric bass guitar, which pioneered in jazz music in the same era, and by percussion produced from a drum kit that combines drums and cymbals.

Like many British rock bands of the late 70s, were covered in American blues, but they took that influence in a much heavier direction than most of their peers and followers, creating a powerful, stomping sound that also incorporated elements of British folk, Psychedelia*, soul and reggae.
Led Zepplin have also been credited as significantly impacting the nature of the rock industry, particularly in the development of album-oriented Rock and stadium rock.

The rise of Apollo
Each week in Rocked, we talk to emerging stars blowing up right now – whether it be a huge viral moment, killer new track or an eye- popping video – these are the rising artists certain to dominate the near future.
This point in Apollo’s career finds him at the precipice of stardom. He has an ever-growing base of half a million monthly listeners on Spotify – each one clearly a fan of Apollo’s ability to craft a beautiful melancholy with his sound and lyrics. But the road leading the 23-year-old east Londoner to this point has taken him through unexpected places. He first discovered the peace that music offered him when, aged 12, his brother brought home a guitar, having traded a tenner and some food from McDonald’s for it. Learning from YouTube tutorials, Apollo came to master the guitar, the drums and piano, and as such, he was granted a scholarship to study at London’s prestigious Guildhall School of Music.
In his three years of releasing solo music, Apollo has crafted a soft, vulnerable sound and style. 2022’s ‘Beyond the line’ EP proved his ability to confront the most difficult and personal topics – love, mental illness, addiction issues – with a delicate intimacy. The project is at points intense, at points calming, and often both simultaneously – this expert balancing act has led ‘Whatever people think’ to over 16 million collective spins on Spotify alone. With a second project scheduled for release this summer, the singer-songwriter is gearing up to fulfil the promise of his potential.
What is it about the textures of rock music that you feel best marries with the content of your lyrics?
“It’s a good question. I am massively inspired by rock music. I think with rock music, in general, you have this really outgoing instrumentation going on. And you know, the songwriting and the message of the song is at the forefront, which isn’t the case in a lot of other genres today. So, for this new EP that’s really classic rock focused– hopefully, it will allow fans to understand the context of the songs a lot more without any other sort of sonic distractions going on.
You’ve said before that music is your therapy and that you don’t have another outlet. When did you discover that music could offer healing?
“I guess it stemmed from when I was about 13. Music was just always the thing that I could fall back onto. You know, I went through quite a lot of mental health issues as a kid, as a lot of us do. And music just seems to be the thing that sort of calmed me down, it sort of allowed me to reason with things and I guess as I’ve just gotten older, it’s almost just become second nature to myself now. Yeah, I just haven’t found that peace with anything else so far.”
How have you managed to strike a balance?
“It’s been a journey; it hasn’t always been perfect. I think when I first started getting into the industry, I drank a lot. I was taking a lot of stuff. I didn’t really know how to deal with the pressures. So, I struggled with that side of it for a while, but over the last year, I’ve spent equal time on music and getting myself straight and narrow. So, it started to go hand in hand. I’ve started to have a bit more of a voice in what I’m doing rather than it being navigated by people around, so yeah, it’s positive.”

Evaluation- Magazine front cover

Throughout the process of creating my magazine cover, I have made many decisions and choices throughout; tried and tested to make it seem as professional and help it to stand out as much as possible. The use of mise-En-scene shows how the background color contrasts well with the colour of the font. There are some parts of the cover that stand out clearly to the audience like the artists name and the main masthead. The reason I decided to with the colour red for the coverline and artist name is because I thought it was contrast well in front of the black background, and it also matches the overall genre of my magazine. For my front cover, I decided to use a range of fonts, this is because I didn't want the cover looking plain or boring because I believe that a wide usage of fonts can add lots much more detail to the cover, and I also made some texts like the masthead and artist name, bigger than others
